Pacific Trail at Crater Lake reopened as fire risk subsides

Crater Lake National Park, Oregon, USA

The Pacific Crest Trail at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon is once again open to the public.

Parts of the popular route were closed due to dry conditions and wildfire risks. But conditions for hikers have improved.

This summer has proved to be a busy one for wildfires throughout the Mountain West, and Oregon has been no exception. Closing the stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail that runs through the park was an unprecedented step, but the US National Park Service felt it was necessary given the dangers of wildfires.

PCT hikers can once again trek through Crater Lake National Park, the park’s superintendent Craig Ackerman announced.

“All other trails in the park are currently open and any previous trail or area closure orders are rescinded,” Ackerman said. “The Pacific Crest Trail is now fully open within the park.”

Crater Lake National Park is Oregon’s only national park. The state park system there is extensive, however, it’s been challenged by budget stresses and fires in recent years.
