The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics committee has announced its choice of the site for the Olympic surfing competition.
The officials said Trestles Beach at the San Onofre State Beach. The popular surfing spot is located between Los Angeles and San Diego, roughly an hour south of Los Angeles by car.
“We are honored to share this gem of California’s state park system with the world,” said California State Parks Director Armando Quintero upon the announcement. “This iconic beach that has inspired generations of surfers will now welcome the world’s best athletes and show millions what’s possible when public lands are preserved and shared with the world.”
The 2024 Olympics were hosted by France but the surfing competition that year was held on the other side of the world in the French Pacific Ocean territory of Tahiti.
The 2024 games sparked a revived interest in tourism to France. In contrast, tourism to the United States is plummeting in the wake of tales of travelers receiving harsh treatment, imprisonment, and deportation upon trying to enter the US for tourism purposes.
With a global tourism boycott on the US building steam in response to the Trump administration’s trade and immigration policies, California Governor Gavin Newsom is scrambling to get the message out that foreigners are still welcome to the Golden State.
Economists recently reported that oil demand has dipped globally mainly because of fewer trips to the United States from abroad. There is rising fear that the strengthening boycott on travel to the US could ding the appeal of the LA28 Olympic Games.
“California’s natural beauty is world-renowned, and with LA28 it will take center stage for the sport the Golden State is best known for: surfing,” Newsom said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to welcoming the world to explore and bask in all that makes our state a global leader.”
