The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says it is creating the state’s newest wildlife management area, the first in two decades.
TPWD declared that it will soon christen the Trinity River Wildlife Management Area in east Texas. The area will be comprised of 6,900 acres (approx. 2,800 hectares) TPWD purchased in Anderson County.
The creation of the Trinity River Wildlife Management Area was made possible thanks to a partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation and the Knobloch Family Foundation, TPWD said.
“The establishment of the Trinity River WMA presents an opportunity for the conservation and management of an ecologically unique and important habitat,” TPWD Executive Director David Yoskowitz said in a release.
The Texas parks authority says it’s planning an extensive habitat rehabilitation project at the site, which is home to an array of migratory birds and ground species.TPWD promises to eventually open the site to camping, birdwatching, fishing, and occasional hunting.
