Patagonia Lake State Park in Arizona will mark its 50th anniversary on April 1.

Arizona State Parks and Trails said Patagonia Lake boasts some 235,000 visitors every year, making it the fourth most popular state park in its system. The agency is expecting the crowds to turn out again this week.

ASPT isn’t planning any special events to mark the park’s 50th anniversary, but officials there are inviting the public to visit the park to mark the occasion in their own ways.

“From rolling hills and diverse wildlife to on-the-water fun, secluded boat-in campsites and cozy cabins, Patagonia Lake is a cherished oasis in southern Arizona,” said Arizona State Parks and Trails Executive Director Bob Broscheid in an official release. “We’re proud to celebrate 50 years of this incredible park and look forward to welcoming visitors for decades more.”

ASPT said the increase is unfortunate but necessary as costs rise and adjustments must be made to keep the state parks staffed and in working order.

Patagonia Lake State Park is being upgraded. The agency says it’s busy adding new restrooms and showering areas while enhancing wastewater collection to accommodate the growing crowds.

“Known for its scenic beauty and variety of outdoor recreation activities, the park offers boating, swimming, and fishing on the 260-acre lake, along with hiking and birding in the adjacent Sonoita Creek State Natural Area,” ASPT said.
