Would-be visitors to Hawaii’s largest national park are warned to plan ahead and expect crowding as an anticipated holiday rush arrives during maintenance closures.
Every year an array of holiday-themed events are organized at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This year promises to be busier than usual, according to the National Park Service.
“Expect crowds, traffic, and full parking lots at popular locations daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” NPS said.
Holiday season events are free, but visitors will still have to pay the usual park entry fees. NPS is organizing at least seven separate events from early December to early January 2025.
Among the planned activities, visitors are invited to enjoy Holidays at Kahuku on December 7. Revelers can enjoy “local handmade crafts,” along with “food for sale, great live music, and free shave ice minis.”
Other planned events include a special presentation on the park’s native bird species, a play, an opportunity to give input on a new management plan for a portion of the park, and hula performances. Visitors can also take part in guided tours to the summit of the Kilauea volcano.
NPS is also recruiting volunteers to help spruce up part of the park during the holiday season. Volunteers will mainly be put to work “to help remove invasive, non-native plant species that prevent native plants from growing.”
