California to spend $8 million on art in community parks

Location: California, USA

California authorities have announced a new grant program to bring more art and artistic expression to the Golden State’s community parks.

Parks California will manage the new “Arts in California Parks” project over the next four years. The state launched the initiative last week, issuing a call for proposals. Grants for programs or art installation projects will be open to nonprofit organizations, Native American tribes, and local government agencies.

A total of $8 million will be available to winning proposals in 2024.

A first-of-its-kind initiative, California plans to run two more grant cycles, in 2025 and 2026 “for a total of three funding cycles” officials with California State Parks said in a release.

“Eligible projects will enhance connections to local cultural history, parks, open space, and natural areas through community events, programming, and installations that help build sustainable community connections, health, and well-being,” the agency said.

Among other criteria, any proposed art installations or artistic programs must be made available to the public. They must also “demonstrate how they meet the goal to create community connections to California’s diverse natural and cultural history.”

The new initiative is being co-organized by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the California Arts Council, and Parks California. The organizations plan to announce the winning projects and grand distributions in September 2024.
