Grand Canyon proposes fee increase for backcountry hikers

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA

The US National Park Service wants to increase the fee charged for backcountry use of the Grand Canyon.

The public has until October 12, 2024 to comment on the proposal or lodge a complaint against raising backcountry hiking and camping fees.

The application to enter and camp overnight in the Grand Canyon’s backcountry would stay the same at $10. But substantial cost increases are in store for overnight stays.

The cost of camping below the rim would increase from $15 per night to $24 per night under the proposal. That’s an increase of 60%.

Fees for above-rim overnight backcountry stays would be increased from $4 per night to $6 per night, a 50% jump in cost.

NPS says the substantial backcountry fees increase is needed to pay for “backcountry activities and park projects that enhance the visitor experience.”

Members of the public who want to make official comments on the proposal are invited to do so at a website NPS has set up for that purpose. The public written comment period closes on October 12.
