Grand Canyon’s North Rim reopens for summer

Location: Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA

The Grand Canyon’s North Rim is open to visitors from mid-May, the United States National Park Service recently announced.

As one of America’s most popular attractions, the South Rim entrance to the park is open year-round. Isolation and inclement weather keep the park’s North Rim entrance closed to the public during the winter months. NPS now says the North Rim was made accessible for the summer months beginning May 15.

“Visitor services, including the campground, Grand Canyon Conservancy bookstore, and the Backcountry Information Office will open at 8 am,” the Park Service said in a release. “Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim operations, including lodging, groceries, retail, food and beverage services, shower and laundry and the gas station, will also open May 15.”

Most services at the park will be closed again starting October 15. The North Rim will stay open for day use until November 30 “or when winter conditions prevail” NPS said.

The North Rim is higher in elevation than the South Rim and experiences heavier snowfall in winter, thus the closure during the winter months. Since it’s less accessible and closed during winter, the North Rim tends to see only about a tenth of the number of visitors that the South Rim hosts.

Though day-use opened for the summer on May 15, reservations are still required for lodging and camping.
