Largest donation in US National Park Service history

Location: United States National Parks

The United States National Park Service is set to receive the largest private donation in its history through its sister foundation.

The National Park Foundation announced that it will receive $100 million dollars from the Lilly Endowment, a philanthropy based in Indianapolis.

The National Park Foundation was established by the US Congress in 1960 to receive donations in support of America’s national park system.

Exactly how the money will be spent remains to be seen, but the US national park system has a long wish list of projects sitting on the back burner.

Record visitation coupled with budget cuts has left US national parks plagued with a long maintenance backlog and improvement projects that parks managers would like to complete, but can’t. The $100 million infusion will go a long way toward addressing the problem, but it won’t eliminate it entirely.
