A state park in western Colorado, USA will host a wakeboarding competition this weekend.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife says that special access restrictions will be put in place beginning Friday at Sweitzer Lake State Park. The new temporary rules will be enacted to facilitate a state championship competition lasting all weekend.
The park is located about 20 miles or 32 kilometers southeast of the city of Grand Junction.
“Colorado Parks and Wildlife will welcome the World Wake Association for its wakeboard state championship event June 28-29 at Sweitzer Lake State Park,” CPW announced in a release.
Officials said Friday will be reserved for competitors for practice. The competition itself will occur on Saturday.
While the championship is under way other boaters will be permitted to enjoy parts of the lake but they must abide by a “no wake” rule.
The western side of Sweitzer Lake will be set aside for the two-day competition. Recreational visitors can enjoy the eastern side and are also invited to view the competition from the water provided that they don’t disturb it too much.
“This will allow for the athletes to all compete in the same conditions,” Sweitzer Lake State Park manager Scott Risk said.
The state wakeboarding championship will occur amid a scenic backdrop. Sweitzer Lake State Park boasts views of mountains and wide high desert vistas.
“There are some really talented people wakeboarding in this event,” Risk said. “This will be a great event for people to come out and watch.”
